Upon Arrival
Your character has been ripped from their own world. Perhaps they were merely mowing the lawn, or brushing their teeth when it happened, or maybe they were in the fight of their lives... Either way, something happened, and all of a sudden they were falling through the darkness. For a long time they fell, through seemingly empty space, until eventually there was a light at the end of the tunnel. Sometimes the transition is graceful, and the new arrival rather just floats out of the portal and into their new home. Sometimes it's rough, and the portal spits them out through the Speakeasy's door and halfway across the lawn. Actually, usually it's rough. The portal's a jerk.
Coming around, they might realized that they're on the lawn of a great estate, surrounding by rolling hills, sprawling forest, and beyond that, the great crags of mountains. In a word, the wilds of South Dakota. If they're unlucky, they got spat onto the hard wooden floors of the speakeasy's entry hall instead. The door, after all, goes both ways. Unfortunately, the way it does not go is back home, and what was a shimmering portal just moments before is just a big stone doorway.
If anyone is about, they might realize that their clothing is a little strange. Not terribly so--- suits and hats seem to be popular. Perhaps there's a wedding about? The women seem to favor blouses and long skirts, perhaps the occasional sunhat, perhaps a fancier one or two in fur coats. There's no wedding, though, we're sorry to tell you. Your poor character has been tossed unceremoniously through an inter-dimensional door and right into America in the 1930's. Specifically into a town called Timbre Ridge.
1933, specifically. It's nearing the end of the Prohibition, and though the selling and consumption of alcohol is still banned, conflicts over this controversial law are getting heated. Speakeasies, places where people gather to drink and party in secret, have become popular and common place, though Timbre Ridge only has one, and it's a well guarded secret. It's been fondly nicknamed, "The Dregs."
In fact, Timbre Ridge has a lot of secrets, such as the warren of vampires that run the place, or the werewolves that populate the local woods, or all the ghost stories... But there's no need to worry your pretty little head about that right now. No doubt someone will be with you shortly to help you get settled in and show you the ropes. After all, the owner of the estate, Maximus, is a businessman, and guests are always good for business...
Living in Timbre Ridge
"But I don't know anything about the Prohibition! Or America in the 1930's!"
Good! Unless your character is an expert on the era, then you don't need to know too much! Your character has just been flung from where ever they were--- from Manhattan to the far reaches of the galaxy--- into an entirely different time and space! They know just about as much as you do! So relax and have fun with it! Treat it like a whole new world, and maybe you'll learn a thing or two along the way!
They might speak a little strangely, but the native residents of Timbre Ridge can guide your character through the whole process of fitting in, if your character can live without their computer or cell for a while. Maybe your character will conform, but maybe they won't! Maybe they don't like the way things are in Timbre Ridge and want to change it. Hell! Maybe they will! This world is yours for the molding, so get to it!
However, if your character is a native of Timbre Ridge, both in era and in place, and they've been living there their whole lives, then you'll have to know a thing or two in order to place them right. No fear though, we're here to help!
First of all, your character has probably been making a living somehow! Sure, we're on the cusp of the Great Depression, and money is tight, but it's unusual for people in Timbre Ridge to be unemployed. They do well for themselves--- at least for now. Or maybe your character is a bum. You bum.
In case your character isn't though:
Jobs in Timbre Ridge
Timbre Ridge is a mostly agricultural town. They sell food, they sell wool, they breed horses and cows and any other livestock you might imagine. Many of the people who work in Timbre Ridge are farmers, or they work for farmers, be it tending the fields or helping out with the animals. With so many animals in town, vets and farriers and other similar jobs are also very common.
Your character might also get a job in one of the small general stores in town, or helping to move the products from point A to point B, or they might even make a buck or two doing odd jobs around town. Women might find jobs as maids or cleaners. Timbre Ridge is a fairly traditional minded town. However, with so many modern individuals coming in... no doubt war is on the horizon!
There is also a small elementary school within the town, so one might get a job there or in the high-school in the neighboring town, though it's quite a ways.
Waiters, butchers, hair-stylists... There are many jobs to be had, but very few of them are glorious, and they don't pay much. There's enough money to live off of in Timbre Ridge, but don't expect to retire any time soon.
Of course... If you're looking for real money, there are rumors that Maximus is always hiring, up at the Verondi estate. No one knows what the pay is, or what the job is even, but the man has a lot of money, and no doubt can deliver. Be careful who you make deals with, however... There are many rumors surrounding the Verondi Estate, and none of them are nice. People go missing all the time in Timbre Ridge, but it's a long way from any kind of real help... All those wild animals up in the woods, you know. It's dangerous out there.
